Bethel Regional High School, Bethel, Alaska

  • Psychology has always been a secondary interest of mine. I was going to study Drama Therapy if I had not pursued a career in education.

  • I also acted as a Credit Recovery Advisor. I was an academic advisor, tutor, go-between teacher and student, as well as an emotional cheerleader for our students who were in danger of not graduating.

Temporary Teacher, 08/2020 - 11/2020

Bethel Regional High School, Bethel, Alaska

  • Although my certification is in Drama, I was an Earth Science and Biology teacher at my hometown’s high school.

  • Due to the community spread of COVID-19 in Bethel, students were not present for in-person instruction. We printed physical packets for weekly pick-up and then switched to Keynote presentations to be airdropped. The Keynotes consisted of a full week’s worth of instruction, complete with videos and voice recordings from teachers as well as all of the mandatory assignments.

  • I checked in on my 70 students weekly and truly enjoyed getting to know them.

  • The lack of in-person instruction contributed to lower passing rates. To combat this, I personally called and went to my students’ homes during my non-contract hours to make sure they had all the support and materials they needed to be successful. Because of this extra effort, I got my passing rate up from 19% to 31% in just one day.
